It's easy to get caught up in the stress of the moment, especially when you're focused on your career. But it's important to remember that careers are marathons, not sprints. It takes time and patience to build something meaningful, and sometimes that long-term vision can get lost when you're focused on the day-to-day. Naval Ravikant says it takes about ten years to truly build a career in any field.
Looking back, I've been working for eight years, and I can see he's right. I've built a solid foundation, but I'm still figuring out the direction I want to go. It's about evolving my career into something that I truly enjoy, not just what I feel I have to do.
It's amazing how much of life comes down to time and consistency. It's about those small, daily actions that add up over the long haul. Building a career is the same. It's about those consistent efforts, even when they're challenging.
Another thing I've realized is how important it is to enjoy the journey. It's easy to reach a goal and feel empty if you didn't enjoy the process. Sometimes, the journey itself is more valuable than the destination. After achieving a goal, people often move the goalposts or realize the goal wasn't that important to begin with. It's crucial to find a pursuit you enjoy, regardless of the outcome. That way, you're guaranteed to have a good experience, even if the end result isn't exactly what you expected.
When I set goals now, I try to imagine what it would be like to achieve them. Would it truly change my life in a meaningful way? This helps me focus on goals that are truly important to me.
Because careers are long, it's essential to optimize for the long term. You wouldn't sprint a marathon, and you shouldn't sprint your career either. It takes time to build a meaningful career, and you need to approach it with care and consistency. Think about the big picture, not just the short-term wins. That's the best way to build a sustainable and fulfilling career.
