My first day in the Google NYC office

I’d like to preface this article with the fact that I feel incredibly lucky to have the job I do. While no job is perfect, it’s not lost on me that this job has afforded me a lot and has positively impacted my life. I’ve learned a ton, worked with incredibly smart engineers, and helped build applications that are used by billions of people around the world.

With that said, being a Software Engineer at Google is still a job. While it’s no mystery that working at Google comes with a plethora of perks like competitive pay, good work-life balance, free meals, free massages, nap pods, onsite health care clinics, and much much more, there are also downsides to working at the company. For me, by far the biggest downside is one that ironically no one talks about, but it affects everyone.
